You looked for your tnsnames.ora file at /home/oracle/oracle/product/10.2.0/db_1/network/admin/tnsnames.ora.But, the db_1 is the $ORACLE_SID!Traditionally, the tnsnames.ora is in $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin with a soft link to the ORACLE_SID location. In windows, look for the tns_admin registry entry.

Thank u for the reply. i have used TNS_ADMIN.I have a directory under the oracle home.but there is no tns_admin in that directory.I opened my oracle home. i found the tns_admin.. but its unable to connect oracle.
My version of windows XP is SP2 and I am using an X86 version of 10.2.0.5. The database is running on my local machine at port 1521 and I am using tcp/ip. I have tried following all of the suggestions in the rest of the forums, but to no avail. Any ideas?
You need to set the tns_admin parameter in your environment variables. If you want a GUI then use the tnsnames.ora file in your Oracle_Home/network/admin folder. Do not modify the listener.ora file at all. You should be connecting using the tns_admin$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora driver instead of the listener.ora driver.
The main problem is that you are connecting using the wrong driver. The tnsnames.ora and the listener.ora are in the network/admin folder. You should be connecting to the database using the tns_admin$ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora driver instead of the listener.ora driver. There is no listener.ora file in your listener_1 folder.
