We see a lot of the park being attacked and decimated by Tyrannosaurs, Triceratops, Apatosaurus, stegosaurs and other prehistoric beasts, and it's all thrilling enough. But the film doesn't explain why the dinosaurs are so vicious, how they could possibly be capable of such evil acts, and why people should care. The dinosaurs and humans are just fighting over a piece of real estate, and it's not clear what the human characters stand to lose from the attack. Indeed, the film barely makes any effort to explain why humans are there in the first place, and why we should care. In fact, the film gives us no real sense of what the human characters, who are presented as a bunch of jerks, are up to. Is it a rebel act against the inhumane acts of the dinosaurs? Or are they out to make money for themselves? Or are they just dumb and ignorant and gullible? We don't find out.
The story moves fast, the movie appears to want to keep its audience on the edge of its seat, and the Neill character is a bit wooden, but the movie has a strong opening, which establishes the brutal geography of the island, the challenges of maintaining a stable ecosystem, and the sad necessity of keeping the park under wraps to prevent a public panic.
The problems start when the program is shut down, and the raptor escapes from its enclosure and wanders around the island, which is only a few hours from the nearest evacuation site. The raptor is tracked down by the surviving T. rex, and a climactic chase sequence ensues. The T. rex is lukewarm as a villain, but the movie does a good job of weaving him in to the story: when the T. rex finally corners the raptor in an enclosure, you can feel the awesome power and the desperation of this great hunter, trying to keep his prey within reach and at bay. The T. rex is also a better character than the dinosaurs -- they are really just props for the movie, while the T. rex shows some realistic, even human emotions.
The T. rex chase is one of the best chase sequences ever filmed, and the CGI sequences of the dinosaurs in the film are genuinely impressive. Unfortunately, the movie gives us too many of them, and the story winds up too often in sequences that are little more than slow-motion blunders. Why, for example, does the raptor jump up onto a low-hanging branch to make itself a bit easier to catch? (The answer is that it knows how to fly, and that a great predator likes to fall.)
