The AI is an effective method to define dryland extent. It provides a good estimate of the amount of dryland extent in many parts of the world (Wonca et al. 2017262) and has been used extensively to study dryland areas on the global scale and the regional scale (Jiang et al. 2014263; Kang et al. 2014264; Kanter et al. 2014265; Zhang et al. 2014266; Li et al. 2015267; Lee and Park 2016268; Han et al. 2016269; Zhang et al. 2016270; Liu et al. 2017271). An important source of uncertainty in the AI is the accuracy of country-level datasets used to calculate the AI (Oberhuber et al. 2015272). The AI can be used as a proxy for dryland extent, because it is correlated with dryland extent (Jiang et al. 2014273; Wonca et al. 2017262; Zhang et al. 2016270), and the proportion of the land area with a very high AI is also strongly correlated with the area of highly degraded land (Jiang et al. 2014273; Wonca et al. 2017262; Zhang et al. 2016270). The AI can be used to monitor changes in dryland extent as well as to create a baseline against which to compare future projected changes in dryland extent (Zhang et al. 2016270).

The types of vegetation that dominate in drylands are variable. For example, in the Sahel, savannah ecosystem dominates, but desert ecosystem dominates dryland areas in the Arabian peninsula, while wet grassland ecosystems dominate other drylands (Figure 3.6). These ecosystems and their responses to increasing atmospheric CO2 are key in determining the impacts of desertification, as well as other drivers such as climate warming, land use and fire. Increased CO2 has been shown to increase biomass production in savannah ecosystems (Soussana et al. 2014236), while conversely, not increase biomass production in desert ecosystems (Chambers et al. 2013237; Andela et al. 2013238; Roderick et al. 2015239). Further, the response of other ecosystem types is not well known (Wang et al. 2011240; Díaz et al. 2017241).
