This paper discusses and demonstrates how and why stringi, a mature R package for fast and portable handling of string data based on ICU (International Components for Unicode), should be included in each statistician's or data scientist's repertoire to complement their numerical computing and data wrangling skills.
Cloud-based computing has created new avenues for innovative research. In recent years, numerous cloud-based, data analysis projects within the biomedical domain have been implemented. As this field is likely to grow, there is a need for a unified platform for the developing and testing of advanced analytic and modeling tools that enables those tools to be easily reused for biomedical data analysis by a broad set of users with diverse technical skills. A cloud-based platform of this nature could greatly assist future research endeavors. In this paper, we take the first step towards building such a platform. We define an approach by which containerized analytic pipelines can be distributed for use on cloud-based or on-premise computing platforms. We demonstrate our approach by implementing a portable biomarker identification pipeline using a logistic regression model with elastic net regularization (LR-ENR) and running it on Google Cloud. We used this pipeline for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease based on a combination of clinical, demographic, and MRI-based features and for the identification of the most predictive biomarkers.

This manuscript describes Sarek, a workflow for analyzing next-generation sequencing (NGS) data. Sarek is based on Nextflow, a popular tool for defining computational workflows. In order to process NGS data, i.e., generating annotated variant calls ready for downstream analyses, multiple complex software tools need to be executed. This is not only computationally demanding, but also labor-intensive due to operators having to install and maintain a complicated collection of software as well as diagnose failed analysis runs, often resulting in high management overhead compared to the total computation time (Yakneen and Waszak, 20201). Sarek aims to minimize the installation and management time overhead by building a NGS workflow on top of Nextflow, automatically installing the required software components. These software consist of some of the state-of-the-art tools in read mapping, variant calling and annotation and quality control. Sarek is a welcome addition to the toolkit of bioinformaticians looking for an NGS analysis workflow, which can be easily installed on a HPC cluster or cloud environment. The article is well-written and clear to understand. While I'm happy to recommend indexing of the manuscript also in the present form, I have a few suggestions how to improve it:

InVivoStat is a free to use, statistical Windows program which uses R as its statistics engine. It is designed specifically for scientists conducting animal experiment. The user interface is both easy to use and intuitive to the non-statistician. The main modules is Summary statistics, Single and Repeated Measures Parametric analysis, P-value analysis and Power analysis. Additional modules includes Dose/Response, Paired T-test, Chi-square and Fisher's test, Correction, Survival and regression analysis.
jamovi -- a new "3rd generation" statistical spreadsheet based on R It has a very nice user interface making is easy to create or load and edit data including computed variables and apply statistical analysis. For now there is only a few functions available compared to R's great many packages, but the setup makes it relatively easy for skilled users to add new functions. Thus it's expected that more functions will be available from the online library in the near future. New modules on meta-analysis, mixed linear effects models, general linear models, robust statistics been added recently. It's contributed to the scientific community by the people behind JASP.It's free and opensource.
