The game was originally released for the UNIVAC 1103. Oregon Trail was then marketed as an educational program for grade schools, but it was soon expanded for use in the homes of the general public.

The game ends when all players have died. Players can also exit the game by dying or reaching the end of the trail. Depending on whether the game is played solo or multiplayer, players can win the game by surviving all six weeks, or by having the most people survive and having the most money. Additionally, there are a number of collectibles, which may or may not contain real money. There are seven types of collectibles: food, livestock, medicine, tools, guns, ammunition, and gold. Gold is a separate collectible item from the other six types. Players who survive can take the extra gold they have won from the collectibles.

In 2002, re-released as a Windows PC game in the form of Oregon Trail: The New Frontier, the game was updated to use the Unicode character set and has been upgraded to use a contemporary art style. In 2012, an iOS version was also released.
