Since Nrretranders proposed the user illusion in 1991, many experiments have been conducted. The results of these studies are inconclusive. For a summary of the latest research, please see the wikipedia entry . In late 2008, there was a conference held in Poland to discuss the topic. The book The User Illusion: Cutting Consciousness Down to Size contains the proceedings of that conference.
Wikipedia has an entry on the User Illusion. This wiki entry comes with a video. You can see it here: User Illusion Video . The video is not very interesting as it contains a number of people saying the same thing. Yet, the video is not as bad as it could be. However, these people have an agenda, and are not impartial. They have no interest in psychology, philosophy, or biophysics. The bloopers occur due to poor equipment. The video is too fast, and it is too grainy to make it really effective.
The User Illusion is full of errors, as well as gaps in logic and reasoning. The book also contains a number of fallacious statements. It is a long book, and may be a good book for a graduate or undergraduate course on consciousness.
The last five pages of the book are a summary of the main points of the book. There is a paragraph on the subject of free will, but this paragraph is essentially pointless. The book should not conclude that free will is an illusion. After all, the book is written from the perspective that free will exists.
Some philosophers, such as Dan Dennett, David Chalmers and Andy Clark have defended the existence of free will. They argue that naturalism is a necessary condition for consciousness, thus the existence of consciousness is a prerequisite for the existence of free will. They argue that free will is an illusion, but a necessary illusion. They argue that the human mind is a model and simulation of reality and it has a limited capacity to model reality. If this model were an exact replica, then it would not be useful as humans would not make correct decisions in their everyday lives. Therefore, they argue that the model is a simulation of reality, a user illusion that allows humans to experience free will, which is not required to exist. This argument is not fatalistic, but merely proposes that free will does not require consciousness.[18]
