Imam Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah was born in Damascus in 691 AH/1292 CE. His full name was Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ayyub ibn Sa'ad al-Zur'i al-Dimashqi al-Hanbali. He was known as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah because his father was the principal (qayyim) of the school of Jawziyyah, which also served as a court of law for the Hanbali judge of Damascus. He was also called Shams al-Din (the sun of religion) because of his brilliance and piety.
He was a devoted student and disciple of Imam Ibn Taymiyyah, whom he accompanied and assisted for 16 years until his death. He shared with him his trials and tribulations, including imprisonment and persecution at the hands of the authorities who opposed their views and teachings. He defended his teacher's legacy and edited most of his works. He also became a prominent scholar and teacher himself, who had many students and followers, such as Ibn Kathir, Ibn Rajab, and al-Dhahabi.
He was an expert in various fields of Islamic sciences, such as Quranic exegesis, Hadith, jurisprudence, theology, spirituality, and history. He wrote more than 90 books on these topics, some of which are considered classics and masterpieces in Islamic literature.
